Jennifer King Named Inaugural Head Coach at North Carolina Central University

Jennifer King has been appointed head coach of North Carolina Central University’s women’s flag football program, which will begin competition in the 2026–27 academic year. NCCU is one of six teams competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

King currently serves as an offensive analyst on the Eagles’ football staff. She is the first Black woman to coach full-time in the NFL, having worked as an assistant running backs coach with the Washington Commanders and later as an offensive assistant and running backs coach with the Chicago Bears. Her résumé also includes coaching at Dartmouth and in the East-West Shrine Bowl, as well as a successful basketball coaching career that featured a USCAA Division II national championship at Johnson & Wales University (N.C.). A former professional player in the Women’s Football Alliance and Women’s National Football Conference, King is a Reidsville, N.C., native and Guilford College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee.Director of Athletics Dr. Louis “Skip” Perkins stated: “What better way to begin our flag football program than with Jennifer King as head coach. Gwynedd Mercy University Adds Women’s Flag Football
Gwynedd Mercy University is adding women’s flag football as a varsity sport, bringing its total intercollegiate offerings to 19 teams. Competition is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 as a member of the Atlantic East Conference.

Director of Athletics Keith Mondillo noted the rapid growth of the sport, citing its addition to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program and its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The university has launched a nationwide search for its first head coach. The Atlantic East Conference includes a mix of NCAA Division III and Division II institutions. This addition follows the university’s earlier announcement of men’s volleyball, which will also begin in spring 2027.

Franklin Pierce University has named Maria del Carmen Sacristan as the first head coach of its women’s flag football program, which will debut in the 2027 season.

Sacristan brings more than a decade of playing and coaching experience. She began with the Stallions in Mexico City (serving as head coach from 2017–2019 and winning a Coed Open League championship), became the first and only woman to play on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute men’s varsity football team, and later played professionally for the Boston Renegades (contributing to WFA Pro League championships in 2022 and 2023). She has competed extensively in flag football across New England at multiple positions. Sacristan holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute Director of Athletics Matt Johnson praised her playing experience, passion, and leadership potential.

Arizona Cardinals Girls High School Flag Football Game of the Week Returns
The Arizona Cardinals have announced the return of the Cardinals Girls High School Flag Football Game of the Week presented by State Farm for its third season. Broadcasts air live on Arizona’s Family Sports (AZFS) beginning September 15, making the Cardinals the only NFL team producing and airing a weekly girls high school flag football game.Eight fully produced 90-minute weeknight broadcasts are scheduled through November 3, featuring play-by-play, analysis, and sideline reporting. The series includes matchups such as Highland vs. Campo Verde, Casteel vs. Millennium, and others. Player-of-the-Game and coach awards support school programs, while the third annual All-Star Experience will take place at halftime of the Cardinals-Cowboys game. Arizona has grown from 57 to nearly 140 high schools offering the sport and now features three collegiate programs launching in the GSAC conference.



Olympic Qualification Update:
Teams Reset for Q-Series After 2026 WorldsThe 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf served as the first Olympic qualifier for LA28. Canada (men and women), Italy (men), and Mexico (women) secured quotas. The United States is already qualified as host.Teams that narrowly missed qualification, including Great Britain women (fourth after a one-point bronze-medal loss), Mexico men, Japan, American Samoa, Austria, and others, are now focused on the 2027 continental championships. Those events will determine the 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams that advance to the Olympic Q-Series in June 2028 (Montreal and Orlando). Multiple national team leaders expressed confidence, describing the process as “just getting started” and emphasizing preparation for the final qualification pathway.
